Life@Kaplan: "America's best city", San Francisco

Last year, San Francisco was voted America’s best city by Business Week. We wanted to know exactly what made this city so special.

We spoke to Kaplan students Martin and Jesper about why they love studying English in San Francisco, and what makes the city a great place to live.

They gave us a fantastic guide for social activities. If you're going to San Francisco or thinking about studying there, take a look at all their great tips!

Martin and Jesper Hubertson, from Merbom, Sweden:

San Francisco is a city that offers something for everyone. We were attracted by the beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. Since we arrived, we have visited many neighborhoods and attractions.

You can shop at great prices, whether you want to buy designer clothing or something second-hand, you will find what you are looking for.

San Francisco has a climate that is often warm and sunny, if you have the opportunity, do not miss a picnic in beautiful Dolores Park.

A hilly workout-walk from downtown takes you to the marina at the touristy Fisherman’s Wharf (Pier 39), where you will find cute sea lions, souvenir stores, restaurants, bars, and attractions. If you like ice cream you must try Peanut Butter Cup ice cream at Dreyers. If you don’t want to walk back, take the train or the world famous cable car back to downtown.

When you are in San Francisco, do not miss some cultural history. The ancient fortress and prison, Alcatraz Island is just a boat ride away (do not forget to book your ticket!). At Alcatraz, you can go around and listen to stories recorded by the old prisoners and prison guards. It is an absolutely stunning island destination.

When you have seen the city and want to widen your views, you can rent a car for a cheap price. An overnight trip to San Jose with its vicinity can be interesting. In San Jose, do not miss Mrs. Winchester House (Mystery House) and the Premium Outlets. A trip to the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge takes you to Muir Woods and Napa Valley.
