Fun Facts: Top 10 things to do in Portland
Portland is an amazing city with lots of fun things to do there and beautiful places to visit. For example did you know that Portland is the second greenest city on earth? Or that it has more microbreweries than anywhere else in the world? You might be surprised to know we even have a Kaplan school there!
Here’s our pick of the top ten things to do in Portland:
1) Enjoy Green Space
Portland has been named as the greenest city in the world. There are lots of nature reserves and parks to visit. Forest Park is a favorite with the locals. It is the largest wooded urban park in the United States and has over 70 miles of walking and hiking trails for those who love nature!
2) Watch an American Basketball game
Portland has its own professional basketball team called the “Portland Trail Blazers” or the “Blazers”. Our students have been known to watch the games down at the Moda Centre.
3) Ride a bike
If you enjoy cycling, Portland has been named as America’s best bike city! There are official bike tours that go around the city and take you around some of the famous landmarks.
4) Drink Beer from a microbrewery
Portland is known as “beervana” because it has so many microbreweries. The beer tastes great. At Kaplan Portland, our students recommend Deschutes Brewery or Mecmenamins pub.
5 ) Listen to music
Potland is home to famous musicians such as The Dandy Warhols and Gossip. If you want to hear live music there's plenty of cool venues including The Mississippi Studios and The Know. Portland has lots of outdoor music venues in the summer too.
6) Read a book
If you're a bookworm then Powells is the place for you. It is the largest independent bookshop in the world. Luckily the store provides you with a map!
7) Eat Donuts
If you like sweet food and desserts, then Portland has a great Donut place called Voodoo Donuts. They come in a range of yummy flavours and look really fun! Brad Pitt is said to have eaten there!
8) Food Carts
On the subject of food, Portland has a great street cart community, which offers food from all over the world, such as Thai, Japenese, Korean, Mexican and Czech dishes, as well as American cuisine, like grilled cheese and southern chicken.
9) Drink Coffee
Portland claim to have the best coffee in the whole of America! If you a caffeine addict or just want to enjoy the atmosphere in a coffee shop, then why not try Barista or Coffee Northwest
10) Road Trip
Canon Beach is an hour and a half away from Portland and has a beautiful coastline. If you can drive and fancy a trip out of the city, it is definitely recommended! It even has Haystack Rock, which was a feature in the famous film "The Goonies".
