The summer is approaching in the northern half of the world – June 20th is the official start of summer! Read on for some fun summer facts.

1. According to the American fashion police, you can only wear white pants (or “trousers” in British English) between Memorial Day (the last Monday of May) and Labor Day (the first Monday of September).

2. The popsicle, a popular American type of ice pops (or “ice lolly” in British English), was mistakenly invented by an 11-year old boy on a cold night in San Francisco in 1905.

He left a glass of soda with a stirring stick outdoors, and the next morning the soda had frozen. He pulled out the stick and ate the first popsicle! Years later he started to sell them at an amusement park in New Jersey.

3. A watermelon is a vegetable, not fruit, and is the official state vegetable of Oklahoma, USA. There are more than 1,200 varieties of watermelons in the world!

4. The biggest ice cream sundae weighed over 24 tons (or 20,000 kg) and was made in Edmonton, Canada in 1988.
