Surfing Your Way into a New Language and World

25-year-old Brazilian student Robson Santos, a professional surfer, joined us recently at our Sydney Manly school in Australia while competing in both Manly and Newcastle at the Australian Open of Surfing and at the Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Pro.

Robson decided to study English in order to move forward in his surfing career, he wants to learn English to help him communicate more effectively when he is travelling the world and competing in international competitions.

When Robson decided to take time out of his schedule to learn English it was vital for him to be located somewhere he can continue to do what he does best. He is currently South American Champion for the World Surfing League and on the WSL Championship Tour. Robson has competed in major competitions throughout Brazil, was a Junior Champion in 2005, runner up Paulista Professional in 2009 and 2010, third place in the WQS Ubatuba 2010, and is currently ranked one of the best surfers in Brazil.

English is not only important for his career but for traveling and socializing too. With surfing comes traveling, with traveling comes different nationalities, with different nationalities comes many languages. English is the official language in a large number of countries and it’s estimated that over 2 billion people in the world speak in English.

It’s also no mystery why Robson decided to study in Sydney Manly, our school is situated directly on the beach front in Manly – you can hear the waves crash from your classroom window!
