Life@Kaplan: Work and Study in Australia

Did you know that with a working holiday visa, Kaplan students can work and study in Australia? When I went to visit our Sydney schools last year, I met three students who found part time jobs in the city. Find out what they have to say about their jobs, how it helps improve their learning and what they think about Sydney.

Larissa from Brazil studies Cambridge English at Kaplan Sydney:

“I decided to study English because of my future job. English is an international language, so if I want to work and travel I have to know the language.
I have a working holiday visa and it was really important to work and study in Australia at the same time. I have been working as a waitress in a Brazilian restaurant in a suburb called Leichardt for seven months.

I have learned a lot. All the customers are Australian and my English listening skills have improved because I can understand the accent a lot better. I also get to practice my speaking skills with the customers.

When I’m not studying or working, I love to go to the beach. I have been to Central Coast, for me the best beach is the CopaCabana beach. I have also been to Manly, Coogee and Bondi.

I would definitely recommend studying in Sydney. The weather is awesome, you can go anywhere at any time. You can walk around the city in the evenings and feel safe. This is really important to me.”

Ashton,  from South Korea studies Cambridge English at Kaplan Sydney:

"English is a common language. Chinese, Spanish and English are seen as the most spoken languages in the world and out of those English is my favorite. I chose Kaplan Sydney as a destination because you can get a holiday visa. I needed to work and study at the same time.

I work in a small restaurant in the city as a waiter. I found the job online when I arrived in Sydney and I’ve been working there for three months. Working has definitely improved my English. I learned different vocabulary for food and restaurants; I also have to speak in English all the time.

In Sydney, there is so much freedom. Where I’m from, there isn’t a big mix in cultures, whereas with Sydney there are people from lots of different countries. You can eat food from all over the world. That’s my favorite thing to do in Sydney."

Mustafa from Turkey studies Intensive English at Kaplan Sydney Manly:

"I chose Australia because it is beautiful, the weather is always nice. In comparison to other countries, Australia is really safe; the people are always friendly and ready to help you.

I work at a pizza place in Manly. I’m the one who makes the pizza! I work 20 hours a week. I earn good money. It was important for me to able to work at the same time as studying because I don’t want to take money from my family. I want to be independent. At my job, everyone speaks in English, and so I have to practice my speaking with them. I find it easy to work and do my studies at the same time.

I love going to the beach. There are lots of amazing beaches in Sydney. My favourite one is Shelley Beach in Sydney Manly. There are lots of amazing things to do in Australia and as a student; you get to do all of them!"
